나에게 <판>이라고 하는 전통공간 속에서 이루어지는 행위를 한장의 사진에 담아내는 일은 너무나 아쉽고, 어려운 일이다. 그렇기 때문에 내가 작업한 <판소리> 사진은 대한민국을 대표하는 명창 선생님들의 모습을 단편적으로 나열하면서, 그 분들이 소리하는 가사를 직접 사진 위에다 써넣어 연장선으로 나타내고자 하였다. 이번 전시는 우리들의 전통가운데 잊혀져 가는 것들, 잃어버리고 있는 것들에 대하여 되새겨보면서 하나의 향연으로 만들고 싶었다. 그래서 큰 주제도 공간에 대한 전통과 현대의 만남이라는 대전제 아래 진행된다. 현대인에게 익숙하지 않은 <판>이라는 전통공간을 재해석하여 그 속에 채워져 있는 소리를 시각화해 보았다. 이 전시회를 통하여 전통에 대한 새로운 시선으로, 많은 사람들이 판소리를 새롭게 인식하는 계기가 되었으면 좋겠다.

Defining the traditional space called <Pan> into a single photograph is a very difficult task for me. For that reason, my compilation of <Pansori> photos are collection of our Pansori masters, with their own signature lyrics written on them. I intended this exhibition to be remembrance of the things we seemed to have lost over time. The theme of the exhibition is the meeting between the traditional and the new. <Pan> is something that we the modern people are not readily used to, and I wanted to present the sound that fills that space. I wish this would be an exhibit good enough for the people to see that tradition once again.
