나에게 있어 사진은 축제와도 같다고 생각한다. 다양한 피사체들과의 만남, 그 만남 속의 희열, 흥분이 좀 처럼 식지 않는 마음,이것들이 내 사진 속에 투영되어있다. 한 장 한 장 셔터를 눌러가면서 기록하는 작업이 모여서 축제를 이룬다.
Photographyfor me is like a festival. I have put in my pictures things likerendezvous between the objects and excited minds. The pictures, one byone, are gathered to build up a festival.
재즈도 마찬가지다. 화려한 아티스트들의 음악, 수 많은 관객들의 환호, 완벽한 무대, 넘쳐나는 에너지를 폭발 시키기 위해 응축해 놓은 향연의 장소, 그것이 바로 재즈의 공간이다.
Thesame goes for the jazz. Jazz is also a festival where the artistsgather to perform, the audience to cheer, and it is where the energyexplodes. That is the place of the jazz.
이번 전시 <축제, injarasum>는 이러한 생각에서 출발을 하였다. 어느 한 부분에 국한 되지 않은 재즈의 다양한 성격을 사진에 담아 내고자했다. 재즈 아티스트뿐만이 아니라, 관객, 무대, 그리고 낮과 밤의 자라섬의 모습까지 사진 속에 담아 왁자지껄한 재즈의축제스러움을 표현하고자 하였다.
That was the initial motivation for theexhibition, <Festival, in Jarasum>. I wanted to reflect a kind ofphotographic jazz in my pictures. I wanted to depict not only the jazzartists, but also the audience, the stage, and the overall shape of theisland to make a big festival-like air of the jazz.
음악이 좋아 사진 속에음악을 담고 싶어 시작한 재즈 사진들이 어느새 한 공간을 채울 수 있다는 사실이 부끄러우면서도 영광스럽다. 자신의 사진에만족하지 못한다면 한걸음 더 다가가서 찍어보라는 로버트 카파의 말처럼, 한걸음 더 재즈와 가까워지는 전시가 되기를 진심으로바란다.
It is an honor, as well as something like shame, to fillout a whole space with the pictures describing the jazz, which wasstarted by my love of music. Robert Capa once said that if one were notsatisfied with his pictures, he should go closer to the object and takeanother. I wish that I can go one step closer to the jazz through thisexhibition.
